Toyota Announces Partnership with Mazda

Last week, Toyota announced a partnership with Mazda. Toyota CEO, Akio Toyoda, said the company had been benchmarking Mazda for a long time, and were impressed by its profitability, despite having a shoestring budget. Mazda sold 1.5 million vehicles worldwide last year, according to Automotive News, while Toyota sold that many in the U.S. alone.

Clearly, the giant Toyota is looking for a way to incorporate cost-saving measures, as well as freshen its current image. While Mazda may not sell many vehicles in the U.S., it does have a loyal fan base that appreciate its Skyactiv engine and transmission, which Toyota admits is years ahead of their own powertrain, in terms of balancing performance and economy. In fact, Toyoda was quoted as saying: “Toyota is trying to be reborn as a company that makes ever better cars.”

While this is not being announced as a merger or purchase, this partnership is expected to generate a new vehicle that involves components and engineering from both automakers. No details are yet available on the size or configuration, so we are not yet sure if there will be much impact on fleet vehicle decision making in the near future.
